Using AI: The Do's and Don'ts
The popularity of AI in hiring is hardly a secret anymore. While you’re using AI to improve your resume and application, employers are likely utilizing it at various stages of their hiring process to get to the most qualified candidates faster.
Check out our list of AI do’s and don’ts from the candidate side of the hiring process!
AI in Hiring: Candidate Best Practices and Red Flags
Here's What You Should Do:
- Use AI to help incorporate relevant keywords in your resume, cover letter, online profiles, and applications based on the job description
- Use AI to create a simple and scannable resume or cover letter
- Use AI to brainstorm, strategize, and structure all application materials
- Use AI to help quantify the true impact of your past experiences and achievements (data speaks volumes)
- Use AI to identify potential interview questions, allowing you to brainstorm strong answers ahead of your interview
- Use AI to research organization, industry, and role trends that you can speak to during your interview
Here's What You Should NOT Do:
- Copy and paste AI-generated responses into your application materials without human review
- Use AI to embellish your skills, experiences, or achievements providing false information
- Use AI tools to feed you answers during a live or pre-recorded interview
- Use AI to complete assessments or evaluation assignments designed to evaluate you beyond the interview stage such as a behavioral assessment, writing sample, graphic design, etc.
- Be inauthentic or lie about your AI usage if asked at any stage of the hiring process
Why You Should Always Choose Authenticity
While AI tools help automate repetitive, time-consuming tasks for both candidates and hiring organizations, there is simply no replacement for human review and authentic connections.
Whether it’s with your resume, during your interview, or any additional assessment steps that may follow, showing up as your most authentic self isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s how you’ll find a role (and a company) that truly fits who you are and where you want to grow.
