Video Interviewing Do’s and Don’ts for Candidates

As you’re preparing for your next interview, be mindful of these critical do’s and don’ts for video interviewing.

Video Interviewing Do's

  • Prepare ahead of time, including checking your equipment.
  • Calm your nerves; put your best self forward.
  • Dress professionally from head to toe.
  • Sit in a well-lit, clean room with a light source in front of you.
  • Sit up straight and in the center of the camera frame, making eye contact with the camera.
  • Find a quiet place to complete the interview, where you have privacy and no distractions.
  • Speak slowly and clearly.
  • Treat a video interview just as you would an in-person interview.

Video Interviewing Don'ts

  • Wait until the last minute to get ready or set up.
  • Drink too much coffee or energizing drinks that could make you jittery.
  • Dress too casually (i.e. a T-shirt and jeans)
  • Sit in front of a window with the light coming from behind you or in a dark room.
  • Sit in a messy or dirty room (i.e. in front of a pile of dirty laundry).
  • Slouch or sit to the side of your webcam.
  • Sit in a busy, noisy common area.
  • Whisper, yell, or rush through your answers.
